The extraordinary, Ordinary Elephant, are Crystal & Pete Damore
Crystal has the most unique, sparse, honest, haunting, grit-of-the-earth voice and lyrics I have ever heard. Pete, her partner in life & harmonies lovingly weaves his warm tones in and around Crystal’s straight-to-the-heart-soul-gut lines such as “. . .we’ve got a good dog, we’ve got a good porch, we’ve got eyes to see we’ve got a good view, we’ve got ears to hear and we are listening, truth is not something we can choose. . .truth is not something we can choose…truth is not something we can choose.”
If you love Americana Music at its best, or if you are not so sure if you love Americana, trust me, come to this show. You will be transported, and if you are not already an Ordinary Elephant fan, you will fall in love. . . hard. If you see Pete’s banjo, and think “uh-oh”, continue to trust me. He partners with that oft-beleaguered instrument like it has the soul of a cello trapped in the body of a distant cousin.
The following quote from Crystal epitomizes OE as musicians and beautiful human beings: “Joy is always there if you’re willing to work for it. We always tell people we named ourselves Ordinary Elephant because there’s no such thing as an ordinary elephant. Every single one is just this amazing, magnificent creature. And all of the everyday things we take for granted in life have a whole lot more to them, too, if you take the time to look.”
OE graced the Bootleg stage two times in two years at the tail end of the “COVID era”, and in the middle of their steady rise in the world of Americana. I have been impatiently waiting for another West Coast Tour since 2022 as in part they created and recorded their third album. Self-titled because of how true to their essence the album feels to Crystal & Pete. Please, use the link below to go to OE’s website &/or YouTube to listen to their almost too good for this world sound. . .many videos set against the lushness of Louisiana Bayou County.
I pulled together just a few highlights from Ordinary Elephant’s (OE’s) 12-year band history, placed them in chronological order, and then interjected the dates of OE’s two previous Bootleg concerts because it shows their impressive musical journey and where on that path, I was lucky enough to host them.
2014 - Crystal and Pete walked away from established careers in veterinary cardiology (Crystal) and computer programming (Pete). The pair moved into an RV in 2014 and began touring relentlessly, earning widespread acclaim.
2017 - Release of breakout album, Before I Go
2018 - International Folk Music Awards - Artist of the Year (2017)
2019 - Release of follow-up album, Honest
“One of the best Americana albums of the year” ~ Associated Press
2019 - NACC Folk Chart (Year-end) - No. 2 Album
2020 – Due COVID and “After years of living on the road, we settled down in Opelousas, Louisiana, about thirty minutes from where I grew up, and it really helped us slow down and feel more grounded and appreciative of the things that were right in front of us. I think a big part of our growth on this album came from finally having a permanent place to call home” ~ Crystal
2021 - First Bootleg Concert (9/25)
2022 - Second Bootleg Concert (7/16)
2024 - Release of self-titled album, Ordinary Elephant
2024 - Album of the Year Nominee, International Folk Music Awards
2025 - IFMA Artist of the Year Nominee, Folk Alliance International
I share the following quotes from Artists who know something about excellent Americana Music:
"Crystal and Pete, Ordinary Elephant, are an extraordinarily well-matched duo, whose music seems to pour out of singular place, like Buddy and Julie Miller, Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer, Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings. Two become one, in song. Stripped down, intertwined clawhammer banjo and guitar, and hand in glove harmonies surprise the listener with focused intensity and musical mastery. Songs are pouring out of them, and I suspect their rise will be steady. I'm a fan." ~Mary Gauthier
"I’m a big fan of Ordinary Elephant—their intimate songs, the weaving harmonies, and the stories that draw you in as if you were gathered around an enchanted campfire."
~ Eliza Gilkyson
